Grandma and the Rat

Yesterday my brother Elon sent a story that happened to my mother and which he put to rhyme. It was so hilarious that I asked his permission to share it on my blog.

Elon wrote, "Here's a poem that tells the story of what happened a few days ago...There's one thing that's unfactual-- she actually drives a Camry, but I wrote the line before remembering, and honestly, I just couldn't get "Camry" to rhyme with "granola."  Please forgive...

Listen my children, and you shall hear
Of a silly old rat and Grandma dear.
It was end of September of '26
(I hope this story gets lots of clicks).
After breakfast of juice and milk and granola,
Grandma hastened on out to get in her Corolla,
To head into town for her weekly excursion
(This is her account, not my personal version).
The engine seemed funny, just not running good,
But she was determined to go as far as she could.
Which wasn't too far, just the end of road "F",
Where she turned right back to the place she had left.
And there, got Regina to help make a call
'cause she couldn't think how to use it at all.
So she called down to Elon to see what to do,
Who said, "Bring it on over, we'll try to help you."
Well, she made her way thither with a chug and a clatter,
Where the fellas came round to see what was the matter.
"Sounds like a miss," Samuel said with decision.
"Maybe something is wrong with the plugs or emissions.”
"But what about air?" Elon finally suggested.
"We oughta check out if the filter's congested."
So a wrench and some pliers were produced on the site,
and a screw and a clip made things look about right.
We worked to loosen the top and the cover,
and then lifted the filter to finally discover–
that a rat was in there! What a shock! what a stress!
There shouldn't be rats in the car. What a mess!
It was bushy and bright-eyed and active and BIG,
and we slammed back the cover on Grandmama's rig.
And we all stood 'round wond'ring what should we do;
that rat in the filter needs to go to the zoo.
And we looked round to see who was bold and was brave;
and who Grandma's car and the day could now save.
One guy had a leatherman, another a glove,
and then a big wrench…You just gotta love,
how these big brawny guys didn't have a good clue,
How to deal with that rat and send it down the kazoo.
Then up stepped yours truly with determination,
to end this showdown and the stress and frustration.
So he pulled up that lid and made a quick grab
with the glove on his hand to protect from the stab,
of the rat's claws and teeth; thus he had the bad rodent,
by the nape of the neck in a very swift moment.
And that ended that! It was time for elation,
As we disposed of the rat--for our families and nation!
After that, it was found that the ole rat had chewed
through a wire on the coil; so we thought it'd be good,
to repair all the damage and clean out the mess
of the acorns and stuffing she had in her nest.
Then we all waved goodbye as GrandMom drove away,
and we went back to our work. What a deal! What a day!
