Our 28th Anniversary--Sunset in the Sandhills

This year was Jonathan's and my 28th anniversary.

The week between trips to SD had been very full, and since we didn't have time for a getaway, Jonathan found instead a little spot to spend the night in Nebraska on our trip up to South Dakota.

It helps me a lot to break up the trip with an overnight in the middle, and thanks to an anniversary gift from Jonathan's dad, we were able to do this.

On the way, I spent most of the trip reading this newly published book out loud to Jonathan--reading aloud--a lost art in these days of technology!

It is written by a lady I had met when we were both young--possibly teens.  My family stayed at her adoptive family home either for a meal or overnight or both. I also knew about Susan when she was a singer in the Bible School college choirs and traveling groups. It was intriguing to read her story, full of both heartbreak and joys, but mostly woven with the grace of God helping this girl through the hard places and bringing her out to joy and peace in Christ.

It was a blessing to read how one person after another brought happiness into her very unhappy life, especially her maternal grandmother who taught her to knit. She would later win a purple ribbon, highest prize, at a county fair in Kansas for knitting a red, white, and blue poncho. God also changed her heart of bitterness and gave her forgiveness to where she could pray for her birth father and later learn that he had stopped drinking and become a Christian!

Jonathan and I enjoyed sitting on the veranda watching a Nebraska sunset.
It is hard for us to just sit around.
But we did.
He and me.
And we walked down to the river near the railroad tracks nearby where Jonathan got a picture of the sunset.
We watched train after train go roaring by on the tracks--and read an article in a Nebraskaland magazine lying there about Railroad rescues.
And got a call from Tim in Arizona who is having a blast working with other cowboys--fixing fences, building corral things, lassoing bulls, experiencing Tim's first flash flood ever, and such like.
Hopefully Tim will come back up and help us in South Dakoat! That is the plan anyway--
up in South Dakota where the grasshoppers are all over the place!
