Tumbleweed Christmas Program

The children have been diligently practicing their instruments, and when Bonnie Lacy arranged for us to come sing at her assisted living center, the children practiced even harder.
Rose's dulcimer teacher (the lady on the far right), asked to join us, and it was so delightful to have her along to help play her ukulele with several of the Christmas songs.
We discovered that a flyer had been printed announcing the "Christmas Musical."
Before the performance, we admired the twinkling Christmas lights of a cheerful lady who had decorated her walker!
The part the folk there seemed to enjoy the most was the reading of a true story called "Tumbleweed, O Tumbleweed," which I found in an old magazine and cut out to save. Timmy and I took turns reading as Danny brought a huge tumbleweed in and the children decorated it.

The story was about a family in the west who didn't have money for a Christmas tree one year. The mother was distraught, and prayed hard for God to supply. Then one morning, the children woke up to hear their mom singing Christmas carols and exclaiming, "Look what God brought!" It was a tumbleweed so huge they could not get it in the door! The family had to open the French doors and bring it in, decorating it then with paper chains, popcorn and whatever else they could to make it into a Tumbleweed Christmas tree!

Danny and I had driven three miles down the road this morning to find the biggest tumbleweed we could find to help us with the story. It was great fun, and the people seemed to really enjoy that part of the program.

After the story, Timmy played his guitar and Hannah her ukulele while we sang a different rendition to "O Christmas Tree."
It was
"O tumbleweed, O tumbleweed,
Your branches are so airy.
O tumbleweed, O tumbleweed,
You made our Christmas merry.
We strung your stems with popcorn white,
With paper chains and strings of light.
O Tumbleweed, O Tumbleweed,
You made our Christmas merry!"

Afterward, all enjoyed the refreshments served by the activities director.
I loved the bowl of punch decorated with slices of orange, lemon, and cranberries.
The girls knitting scarves this evening during family worship, for a project cousin Amaris is doing for Christmas boxes.

  1. So nice you and your children could do this! I know it was special for those folk at the assisted-living facility.
